CHOPIN: comments?

Post by BB+ » Sat Aug 02, 2014 5:21 am

I recently ran across CHess OPenings INternet 24/7. http://www.chessopenings24-7.com

Has anyone here found this to be useful? Is it really up-to-date by (say) PlayChess standards? They have positive reviews from van Wely and Khalifman dating from late January.

I can note that they use engine games as fodder.
Computer engines have, nowadays, become irreplaceable assistants in any serious chess analysis, yet their games are conspicuously absent from most opening books and articles. After thorough research, Chess Openings 24/7 is determined not to make that mistake, and engine games will have the same treatment as any other game. Such an unbiased approach is bound to reap instant rewards, and an example of it will be available in an upcoming article by GM Borki Predojević, whose success in a recent game came mostly as the result of an opening preparation based on Black's incredible success rate in engine games played with that opening line.
As an example: Line 495, Najdorf, English Attack.
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Be3 e5 7. Nf3 Qc7 8. a4 Be7 9. Be2 O-O 10. a5 Be6 11. O-O h6 12. Nd5 Nxd5 13. exd5 Bf5 14. Nd2

Current reputation, playable for both sides.

Key Games (3 of those listed):
Houdini vs RobboLito, Internet Blitz 2013
Houdini vs Houdini, Internet Blitz 2013
Deep Saros vs Houdini, Internet 2011

Their blurb says essentially (you can't copy/paste the text, so I summarise):
This line allows Black hardly any chances to play for a win. A week ago we got an email about Nd2, as we only had 14. c4 recommended. Upon closer inspection, we had 35 games: 32 engine, 2 correspondence, and one GM by transposition. Small sample but stats were in the ballpark of 65%. Move itself is highly positional, hoping to paralyze Black's Q-side and deprive him of kingside counterplay. Surprisingly enough, this plan is incredibly successful, but the price is awkward placement of White pieces (especially Rb4 and Nc4), which significantly hampers White's ambition of mobilizing his Q-side pawn majority.

Another example is "Fire up that engine", following Gelfand's b6 in the Symmetrical English, that was then seen in a Bouquet-Houdini game from TCEC. https://www.chessopenings24-7.com/chess ... 00c5b3bc8f
