kingliveson,

Thanks for posting these results.
I'm quite surprised by the reported node counts in these two games, Houdini appears to be 10% slower than Fire (5209 and 5345 kN/s v. 5704 and 5913 kN/s).
This doesn't match my experience, in all my tests using 1, 2 or 4 threads on Intel processors Houdini is nearly 10% faster than Fire 1.31. For example, on an Intel Core i5-750 @ 2.66 GHz using 4 threads Houdini easily reaches close to 7000 kN/s in most positions, whereas Fire 1.31 gets around 6500 kN/s. The same relative speed difference shows on a Core Duo or on an old Pentium 4.

On your AMD Phenom II X4 processor Houdini appears to be underperforming by about 20% compared to Fire - that's 15 to 20 Elo down the drain...

I'd like to find out whether this handicap is also present on the 1_CPU and 2_CPU versions.
Could you run a couple of games with 1 and 2 threads (using for Houdini the 1_CPU and 2_CPU versions), and report the relative node speeds of Houdini and Fire?

Thanks for your help,
Robert

Shouldn't be a problem, but I can tell you the relative speed without even running a test...anycase, I'll run some games and post them.

on our amd 965 3.4ghz we find Houdini roughly 15% slower than ivanhoes best performers

kingliveson, thanks for the games, apparently with 2_CPU the speeds are about equal.
Angel, I've read your reports about Houdini being "slooooooow" :) - that's not what it's supposed to be.

If any of you have some time to spare, could you be so kind to test the following on an AMD processor:

1) What is the speed (in a fast game) of Houdini 1_CPU compared to Fire at 1 thread?
2) Do you find the same speed differences at 4 / 2 /1 CPU when you run an analysis on a single position for at least 30 seconds?
3) Can you test this 4_CPU Houdini development version(176 kB) in which I have disabled the hash locking code. Do you see any difference in speed?

Thanks for your help,
Robert

Fire 1.31 still faster KN/s than Houdini devel version.

Thanks, clearly it's not the hash locking that slows down the code.

Could you take a look at my question 2)?
Just analyze any midgame position for 30 seconds, and check whether the same kn/s difference exists between the two engines. Preferably three different tests for the 1_CPU, 2_CPU and 4_CPU versions.

Your help is much appreciated,
Robert

Thanks for your help,
Robert
we prefer NOT to use fire buggy as the sound of crashes upset the nieghbors now :)

and we have been useing develop version , but in three 20 minute games it fell behind by over 5 minues before half way stage
score was ok
time was going to lose games though
to be honest we only use 4 core
but know houdini engines probably the best with less cores , without playing again i think it was max 6000 something knods whilst ivan was averageing 7000 plus
but one ivan weve been testing touched 12000 vrs mod12c max 9000 ,,,still a draw though  can send you a screen shot of that
Nothing is ever truly lost , just miss placed and awaiting us

Angel, that's quite an elaborate way of not giving me any useful information :) .

The speed comparison of point 2) doesn't need to be with Fire, you can use any program of your liking e.g. Ivanhoe or Stockfish.
Just analyze any midgame position for 30 seconds, and check the kn/s difference between Houdini and the other engine.
Repeat the test 3 times for the 1_CPU, 2_CPU and 4_CPU versions.

Cheers,
Robert
