WCCC length/schedule

Post by BB+ » Fri Jul 29, 2011 5:35 am

Rémi Coulom gives the schedule for Tilburg: http://talkchess.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=39885

He also notes that "[...] it was a rather unanmous complaint that the tournament is too long. If programmers still agree with that, maybe we could get them to shorten it."

Another point is that the question of shared opening books is also open to discussion.

Finally, he says:
This year, there will be a new election for ICGA programmers representative. I won't be a candidate. I hope another programmer will have the motivation to get involved with the association.
It seems that the Triennial Meeting will be on Wed, Nov 23rd.

It has been too long since it was stretched to go beyond 3-4 (or maybe 5) days max.

The opening book issue was I thought, settled. Nobody wants to play against the same book multiple times, when a good book author will have a book that provides 1/2 of the total moves played in a game, and some games are settled before leaving book at all.

One aspect is now that the WCCC conflicts with the morning conference sessions. Maybe this will change depending on the interest of the participants. I myself am trying to make it for Mon/Tue (and personally I likely would find the human/bridge matches of most interest).

While it's nice that they made the effort, doesn't it sort of defeat the purpose of changing the schedule if the awards ceremony is three days after the end of the WCCC?

Not sure. One of the arguments was that there is a relatively large group of amateur
authors living on a short travel distance from Tilburg (as in 'driving' instead of 'flying').
But then most would not be direct contenders for the title, and might one win
it is not a super big deal to come over just for that photo op..

Anyway I welcome the change and I'm now certainly considering to join just for the
heck of it if I can balance it with work, even though my engine is still approximately at
the crafty level and I won't invest in new hardware yet. (I was originally planning to
debut in 2012)
