Free game recording software for Android?

Postby jjh13 » Fri Jul 19, 2013 12:18 pm

I want to play some games between dedicated chess computers and record them in a .pgn file. Some years ago I used Scid on a desktop computer but this time I want to use my new Android tablet (Nexus 7). What would be a simple and easy to use program to record the games on Android? Preferably free.

Also, what would be a good program to create a tournament table (txt or html) from a .pgn file? My desktop computer runs Linux but through Wine it might run Windows programs. Maybe also a program to create a list of Elo ratings would be nice.

I'm not sure I understand your question. Looking for software for android or PC, for reading PGN or Matchs/Tournaments between Engines?

If for android, there is:

Chess for Android
Tournaments between UCI and XBoard Engines for Android

Aart Bik occassionally runs tournaments between UCI and XBoardengines for Android (compiled for ARMv5TE) using Chess for Android andvarious Android devices.

Thank you for your suggestions - I will take a look at what you suggested for Android - although you might have misunderstood what I'm looking for. I'm not going to play matches between chess engines but dedicated chess computers.

Last time I wrote the moves onto paper and then later inputted the whole game into Scid. Now I'm thinking I will input the game with my Nexus 7 while I'm making the moves for the chess computers.

Aart Bik's Chess for Android could do this with it's freeplay option. I'm just asking if there is some software that is even more practical for this purpose. For example software that people are using to record their OTB chess games.

In addition to the move recording software, I was asking for PC software for getting tournament tables and Elo lists from a .pgn file. Of course if there is a single program to do all of the above, that's fine too.

I tested Chess for Android and I'm not sure if it is possible to save games that are inputted using the Free Play option. There is two options for saving a game. The first is "Save Game to SD" but do not ask for a name for the file or the names of the players. The second is "Save Game to Memory" and gives some memory slots to save the game to. Neither seems to be designed for archival purposes.

Scid on the go is promising and I will go with it (for now). Thank you.

Sorry I still do not understand what you are looking for. Scanner, OCR like for chess over the board ?

There was that lgtbl.exe (cli), but does not work in x64 systems

There was this hgtbl.exe (cli) de H.G Muller included in ChessLive. (better choice)

I think WinBoard, Arena and 'Scid vs PC' can do but you must first have made the tournament with them.

Scid vs PC-4.9.1.x64.exe 2013-05-04

scidvspc_20130714.zip (beta) 2013-07-14

No not anything so fancy :D . Here are two of the players in the tournament: CXG Sphinx Seville and Saitek Chess Calculator. It would be possible to record games by just manually writing a pgn file. That is a bit error prone so it is better to use software and input the game using a representation of the chess board and let the program output the pgn file.

I have now tried Scid on the go and it does the job nicely. (Now the only problem is how to transfer the files to my PC. The file explorers on the Nexus show the file but when I'm making a mtp connection to my Ubuntu PC, I can't find the file or even the scid folder... Maybe time to surrender my tablet to AirDroid's control...)

I don't think that Arena can produce a tournament table out of an pgn file. It does have the ELOStat utility that probably can do an Elo rating list based on a pgn file.

I have the normal Scid installed but I don't remember that it could produce a tournament table from a pgn file and can't see that functionality in XBoard either. But I'm not an expert...

I'm sure that there is some command line utility that will do what I want and probably the amount of games will be so small that the tournament table is doable even manually.

I will later check the other links. Thank you.

An editor of chess with an output format PGN, whose moves are entered manually, this is what you were looking for?

("Scid on the go" is it really? with the camera is that it? If so, I'm glad to hear it.)
Nevermind, I think what you were looking for was just a PGN editor for Android.

Just one thing about "Scid on the go"
You must first create a database (File - New database) which has as extension .si4, then once opened, you will export to PGN. (File - Export).
By default, the proposed path on my device (android 4.2.2) is /sorage/emulated/0/scid/export.pgn but seen from the pc (win) the folder will be at the root. /scid/export.pgn

But you're right, we do not see that and I think it is a question of read/write systems
I've done with an android application "x-plore" and moved to a nearby export.pgn folder, and then I was able to retrieve the file.
