Gaviota tablebases generation

Post by Odeus37 » Sat Jun 26, 2010 11:04 am

Since those tablebases are going to be used by more and more chess engines (like critters now, and I hope soon spark, stockfish, houdini), I started to generate those. And I have a few questions :

1. I started on an unoverclocked Q6600 (quad 2.4 GHz then). Any idea how long it should take ?

2. After like 24 hours, my gtb folder is about 26 GB. And generation is still running (about 120 files done). How much space those tablebases are uncompressed and compressed ?

3. Finally, is it possible to generate those in a compressed format ? Or do I have really to generate then compress those after generation ?

I recommend just downloading them from here. A bit faster & easier. ;)

1.) About 2-3 days for the 5-pieces, IIRC.

2.) IIRC again, about 80GB uncompressed, mine are roughly 6.5GB compressed (cp4 scheme).

3.) You must generate them, and then compress them, unless you download them already compressed (see the link above).

Thanks for your answer. You are right, it would have been way faster to download those. But it was to late when I posted to cancel the generation.

Anyway, those are generated and compressed now :

- took about 2 days to generate those
- about 9 hours to test and compress those (I find kinda weird btw that the "tbcheck" took checks only uncompressed tablebases)

Uncompressed, they were about 38 GB, and 6,5 GB compressed (145 files).

Oh well, at least this way you didn't have to keep clicking on files to download them (I did that over the course of 2 days.... 145 clicks.... :D).

Thanks for the stats. Where did I get 80GB?

Agreed, the point is that flashgot is a plugin for firefox and can operate standalone, no flashget needs to be installed. Just a right-click in a browser on the page and selecting "flashgot them all" does the job in a user picked folder. That's why i like it.
