Post by OrgZ » Thu Nov 30, 2023 12:52 pm

NO DISRESPECT to dear Dorsz.
This was an experiment that i decided to do yesterday, trying to add more venom to this engine....

Sawfish 2TC
is sawfish 1.0 by dorsz but on STEROIDS
Whats new:
Tactical feature, book can be added manually or place in the folder where the engine is and change name/s to saw.bin and fish.bin

more changes are in search.cpp and timeman.cpp

3+1
Score of Sawfish 2TC vs Sawfish 1.0-avx2: 8 - 1 - 111 [0.529]
... Sawfish 2TC playing White: 8 - 0 - 52 [0.567] 60
... Sawfish 2TC playing Black: 0 - 1 - 59 [0.492] 60
... White vs Black: 9 - 0 - 111 [0.537] 120
Elo difference: 20.3 +/- 16.7, LOS: 99.0 %, DrawRatio: 92.5 %

When an engine gets stronger, my mind automaticly thinks that it lost it's style and became more stockfishy. I hope what your project doesn't interfere with its style.

Do you have a testing that supports it still plays the same style or just tactically stronger as in more Stockfish?

This engine still plays savagely, the difference is when it decides to play like wise, its chooses better and doesn't waste opportunities like its father :?.

typical example of one the two games.

Hi @Orgz
Have you checked the engine performance with black piece against other engines and derivatives too? It seems with white piece every thing is ideal. But with black piece we see different story.
My personal opinion is : This version of sawfish
Will have better performance than previous one in 3700+ tournaments. Middle of ranking table. It plays sharper too. But it can not repeat the success of Bluemarlin engine in such
tournaments. Because of weak performance of black piece.
Best regards

Thank you for your valuable input...
note that Dorsz's engine is based on an old code its not up todate with latest sf code....i only tried to enhance its strength but still keeping aggressive play.....latest derivatives are stronger due to them being up to date with stockfish.

As for black pieces on my side 2TC plays well, can defend well too, well it depends on the test conditions (openings, TC, Hardware etc)

First, I quickly checked the changes in the source. They seem reasonable so as not to significantly change the style of the engine. I checked the engine positions and unfortunately I'm not satisfied. According to my tests, the engine is only slightly more tactical than Stockfish. I'd say it's simply tactically faster than Stockfish (to be precise, it's 22% faster per move with 100 seconds on one core), the same result I had with Sawfish 1.0, but it scored on more solved positions, almost like Blue Marlin 15.7. I got 98.9% similarity to Stockfish with Sawfish 2TC, and only 94.6% with Sawfish 1.0 on selected positions.

The changes you make may be good. They probably are, but I often choose weaker settings that change the way the engine plays.

Recently, it has become increasingly difficult to improve Stockfish derivatives. The last Stockfish I tested deeply from 7th of November 2023 plays very well tactically. Tactically, it performs as well as my Swordfish 15.4 and 15.5 and Blue Marlin 14.9 and 14.9a, but has a much higher Elo. Taking into account time and difficult positions solved, the probability that Swordfish 15.1 would show the correct move earlier than Stockfish on which it was based was about 96%. The last best version of the unreleased Swordfish 15.6, by comparison, had only 60% chance of solving the position faster than the current Stockfish. With a constant loss of about 10-15 Elo, it was unprofitable, because theoretically, with about 1/3 more time per move, Stockfish is already catching up and is clearly stronger. This is why Swordfish 15.6 was not released, and instead the clearly more aggressive Sawfish 1.0. However, these differences are no longer as large as they used to be for example a year ago. This is because the current Stockfish is already very polished.
