A French Challenge...

Hi friends!
I want to play the french in the future, OTB and in ICCF. Can anyone force me to forget the idea with a brilliant game?
Conditions: Computers are allowed, and probably necessary... And the game hasn't a time limit but sleeping is not allowed ;)

Problems Analysing with my Laptop

Hi OpenChess users,

I've noticied that when I'm analysing chess positions with my old laptop the kn/s raise to a good (and normal) number but suddenly, after some minutes, it descends slowly but without stop.
What's wrong?

Thanks in advance,

Aitor

PS: It happens with all the engines, and with ...

Re: Houdini 1.03 is available

By the way, people with 4 or 8 cores should experiment with the Split_Depth UCI parameter to achieve the best performance on their hardware. The default value is 10 (tuned on my Core i5-750 @2.66 GHz), but on some systems it may be advantageous to increase this to 12 or 13.

Re: Creating a new (and independent) rating list

As I said before my i5-750 (x64) will be mainly dedicated to this list :)

Re: STS Houdini 1.02

Can you run the same tests again and check whether the results are still the same? I've run the engine a few times and never got the same result. Might be something about the Arena GUI or maybe the 10 sec limit but never been able to replicate same result twice...

Re: Tactics/Strategy in Engine Games

That's true, but the tactics doesn't happen normally because the engine know what trick will have done to itself, and it avoids that lines. To find that defenses, you have to know lots of tactics too ;)
And IMO I think that strategy is the more "human" part of chess, making it the more difficult ...

Re: Creating a new (and independent) rating list

I think it silly to create yet another rating list, unless you spend the time to eliminate confounding variables, and focus on truth. To me this means:
No opening book, but rather X starting positions.
Identical hardware for all tests, but different computers for each engine.
Strongest ...

Re: Creating a new (and independent) rating list

I will dedicate some time of my i5-750 to the list if it is created!
About the time control, I think that repeating control or an incrementing sound better than 10+0, 15+0...

Yes, 10+0, 15+0... leads to meaningless results and poor pgn files, if the games are long enough for time trouble to kick ...
